Why our bylines say Editorial team
No article on this site is written by one person alone. A researcher gathers the facts, a tester runs the apps, a writer turns the results into a readable verdict and an editor checks it all before it goes live. Crediting the editorial team reflects that shared responsibility: if something is wrong, the whole team owns the correction.
Roles on the team
| Role | Responsibilities |
|---|---|
| Research | Checks official pricing, jurisdiction, ownership, audits and privacy policies from primary sources. |
| Testing | Installs apps on Windows, macOS, Android, iOS and consoles, then runs speed, leak and streaming tests. |
| Writing | Turns test data into clear verdicts, setup steps and recommendations for specific readers. |
| Editing and fact checking | Verifies every claim and link, applies our style rules and approves the article for publication. |
| Updates | Revisits published articles when prices, features or audits change and logs the update date. |
Areas of expertise
Between us, the team covers the topics VPN buyers ask about most:
- Network security and protocols such as WireGuard, OpenVPN and IKEv2, explained in our guide to how VPNs work.
- Privacy law and jurisdiction, including data retention rules and what a no logs audit really proves.
- Streaming and geo restrictions across major services and regions.
- Gaming performance, from ping and packet loss to matchmaking, as in our best VPN for gaming guide.
- Device setup on computers, phones, routers and smart TVs.
How we work
The team follows a written editorial policy that covers testing, scoring, sourcing and corrections. We treat independent security research as the standard to measure providers against, for example the NCSC guidance on virtual private networks and the EFF Surveillance Self Defense project.
Independence
The editorial team decides scores and rankings before anyone looks at affiliate terms. Writers do not see commission rates, and providers cannot pay to change a verdict, review an article before publication or remove criticism. You can read how the business side works in our affiliate disclosure.
