You press play on a new episode and HBO Max replies with a message along the lines of "It looks like you're using a VPN or proxy" or "HBO Max is not available in your region". It is one of the most common streaming errors, and it often appears even when you are not knowingly running a VPN at all.

This guide explains why HBO Max shows the VPN error, how to work out what is triggering it on your connection, and 12 practical fixes that cover phones, computers and routers. Because the error shows up most often on the big screen, there is also a dedicated section on fixing the HBO Max VPN error on smart TVs, with step by step instructions for Samsung, LG, Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, Google TV and game consoles. Most people solve it within the first four steps.

What the HBO Max VPN error actually means

Streaming services license shows and films country by country. To respect those licences, HBO Max checks the IP address your request comes from and compares it with lists of addresses known to belong to VPN providers, proxy services, data centres and anonymisers. If your address matches, or if different signals from your device disagree about where you are, playback is blocked.

The wording varies by device and app version. You may see any of these:

  • "It looks like you're using a VPN or proxy." Please turn it off and try again.
  • "Sorry, HBO Max is not available in your region."
  • "Something went wrong" paired with a VPN or proxy error code
  • A blank or endlessly loading player that only fails on certain titles

All of them point to the same root cause: HBO Max cannot confirm a clean, residential location for your connection.

Common causes at a glance

Before changing settings, it helps to know which cause is most likely in your situation. The table below matches each trigger with the quickest fix.

Step 1: confirm whether a VPN or proxy is running

Start with the obvious check, because VPN apps often launch at startup and reconnect quietly in the background. Look for a VPN icon in the status bar on your phone, the system tray on Windows or the menu bar on Mac. Then check these places:

  • Phone settings: look under VPN or VPN and device management for active profiles, including ones installed by work or security apps
  • Computer network settings: check for manual proxy settings or an automatic proxy configuration script
  • Router admin page: some routers run a VPN for the whole household, which affects every TV and console on the network
  • Antivirus suites: many now bundle a VPN or "safe browsing" proxy that switches on by default

If you find one, disconnect it, fully close HBO Max and open it again. Simply pausing the VPN is not always enough, because the app may keep using the cached connection.

Step 2: check what IP address HBO Max sees

Search for "what is my IP address" in your browser. Note the IP address, the internet provider shown and the city. If the provider name is a hosting company or a VPN brand instead of your home broadband or mobile carrier, your traffic is still being routed through a third party. If the city is far from where you are, that mismatch alone can trigger the error.

Keep this information to hand. If you contact HBO Max or your internet provider later, they will ask for it.

Step 3: turn off iCloud Private Relay and Limit IP Address Tracking

On iPhone, iPad and Mac, iCloud Private Relay sends Safari traffic through two separate relays to hide your IP address. HBO Max can treat those relay addresses like a proxy. Apple explains how the feature works and how to switch it off in its iCloud Private Relay support article.

  1. Open Settings, tap your name, then iCloud and Private Relay, and turn it off.
  2. Go to Settings, Wi Fi, tap the info button next to your network and turn off Limit IP Address Tracking.
  3. For mobile data, open Settings, Mobile Data, Mobile Data Options and turn off the same setting.

Step 4: disable browser extensions and private DNS

If HBO Max fails in the browser but works in the app, an extension is the usual suspect. Free VPN extensions, proxy switchers and some ad blockers route traffic or rewrite requests in ways that look like a proxy. Open a private or incognito window with extensions disabled and try again. If it works, turn your extensions back on one at a time to find the culprit.

Also check for Secure DNS or DNS over HTTPS set to a custom provider in your browser settings. Switching it back to your default provider removes one more possible mismatch.

Step 5: clear the cache, cookies and app data

HBO Max stores session data that can include the location it saw the last time you signed in. If you used a VPN earlier, that stale data can keep the error alive after you disconnect.

  • Browser: clear cookies and cached files for the HBO Max site, then sign in again
  • Android: open Settings, Apps, HBO Max, Storage and tap Clear cache, then Clear storage
  • iPhone and iPad: delete the app and reinstall it from the App Store
  • Smart TVs and streaming sticks: the exact menus differ by brand, so follow the platform steps in the smart TV section below

Step 6: flush your DNS cache

Your device remembers recent DNS lookups. If those answers came from a VPN or proxy resolver, they can point you to servers meant for another region. Flushing the cache forces fresh lookups.

  • Windows: open Command Prompt and run ipconfig /flushdns. Microsoft documents the command in its ipconfig reference on Microsoft Learn.
  • Mac: open Terminal and run sudo dscacheutil -flushcache; sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder
  • Phones, TVs and consoles: a full restart clears the DNS cache

Step 7: restart your router to get a new IP address

Home broadband addresses are often reused. Occasionally the address your provider assigns you was previously used by someone running a proxy, and it ends up on a blocklist. Turning your router off for five to ten minutes often gets you a fresh address. Check the result with the IP lookup from step 2.

Step 8: check location services on mobile

On phones and tablets, HBO Max can compare your IP address with the location reported by the device. If location access is denied, or if a location spoofing app is installed, the two signals disagree. Allow location access for HBO Max while using the app and remove any mock location apps from Android developer options.

Step 9: if you use a VPN on purpose, switch to a better server

Many people keep a VPN on all the time for privacy on public Wi Fi. If you want to stay protected while watching from your home country, the fix is usually the server, not the VPN itself. Large providers rotate addresses and maintain servers that are less likely to be flagged.

  • Connect to a server in your own country, ideally in a nearby city
  • Try two or three different servers, because flagged addresses are usually limited to a few
  • Use the provider's recommended or streaming optimised servers if it offers them
  • Consider a dedicated IP address, which only you use and is far less likely to be blocked

Our tests show NordVPN and Surfshark are the most consistent for streaming, while Proton VPN is the strongest pick if privacy is your priority.

Step 10: block DNS, IPv6 and WebRTC leaks

A leak happens when part of your traffic skips the VPN tunnel. HBO Max then sees your VPN address on one request and your real address on another, which looks exactly like a proxy. Check these settings in your VPN app:

  • DNS leak protection: make sure DNS requests go through the VPN
  • IPv6 leak protection: many VPNs only tunnel IPv4, so either enable IPv6 protection or disable IPv6 on your network adapter
  • WebRTC: browsers can reveal your local address through WebRTC, so use the VPN's browser extension or a setting that blocks it
  • Kill switch: keeps traffic from escaping if the tunnel drops mid stream

Windows users can find setup tips for each of these in our guide to the best VPN for PC.

Step 11: try another device or network

Testing on a different connection quickly tells you whether the problem is your device or your network. Switch your phone from Wi Fi to mobile data and try again. If HBO Max works on mobile data but not on Wi Fi, the issue is your router, home VPN or broadband address. If it fails everywhere on one device, the problem is that device's settings or apps.

Step 12: contact your internet provider or HBO Max support

If none of the steps above work and you are sure no VPN or proxy is involved, your provider's address range may be wrongly listed. Contact your internet service provider first and ask whether your IP address is shared or routed through a carrier grade NAT, which can make many households appear as one. Then contact HBO Max support with:

  • Your IP address and internet provider name from step 2
  • The exact error message or code you see
  • The device and app version you are using
  • The steps you have already tried

How to fix the HBO Max VPN error on smart TVs

TVs are where most people meet this error, and they are also the hardest devices to troubleshoot because there is no browser, no IP lookup and often no obvious VPN setting. The good news is that most smart TVs cannot run a VPN app at all, so if your TV shows the message, the cause is almost always one of three things: a VPN on your router, a custom or Smart DNS address saved in the TV's network settings, or stale app data from an earlier session.

Use the table to see what your TV supports, then jump to the steps for your platform.

First: reset the TV's DNS and check your router

Do this on every TV before the brand specific steps. Many people once entered a Smart DNS address to unlock another region's catalogue and then forgot about it. HBO Max detects those resolvers just like a VPN.

  1. Open the TV's network settings and find the IP or DNS section.
  2. Set DNS to Automatic or Obtain from network.
  3. Log in to your router's admin page and look for a VPN client, WireGuard or OpenVPN profile. If one is active, either disable it or exclude the TV with the router's split tunnelling or policy routing option.
  4. Make sure the TV's date, time and region are set automatically. A wrong time zone or a TV region that does not match your country can make HBO Max distrust the connection.

Samsung smart TV

  1. Go to Settings, General, Network, Network Status, then IP Settings, and set DNS to Obtain automatically.
  2. Open Settings, Support, Device Care, Manage Storage, select HBO Max, choose View Details and clear the cache and data. On older models, delete the app from Apps and reinstall it.
  3. Hold the power button on the remote until the Samsung logo appears to perform a cold restart.

LG smart TV

  1. Go to Settings, General or Network, select your connection, choose Edit and set DNS back to automatic.
  2. LG TVs cannot clear a single app's cache, so uninstall HBO Max from the home screen app list and reinstall it from the LG Content Store.
  3. Turn the TV off at the wall for at least 60 seconds to clear the system cache, then sign in again.

Roku

  1. Roku has no VPN support, so check your router first. If the router is clean, highlight HBO Max on the home screen, press the star button and choose Remove channel.
  2. Go to Settings, System, Power and choose System restart.
  3. Add HBO Max again from the Streaming Store and sign in with the activation code.

Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick

  1. Open your VPN app and disconnect, or switch to a server in your own country. Also turn off any auto connect on startup option.
  2. Go to Settings, Applications, Manage Installed Applications, choose HBO Max, then Force stop, Clear cache and Clear data.
  3. Restart from Settings, My Fire TV, Restart.

Google TV and Android TV

  1. Disconnect any VPN app and check Settings, Network and Internet for a Private DNS option. Set it to off or automatic.
  2. Go to Settings, Apps, select HBO Max, then Clear cache and Clear storage.
  3. Restart from Settings, System, Restart.

The same steps apply to Walmart's onn boxes. If you want a VPN that plays nicely with Max on those devices, see our picks for the best VPN for onn 4K Pro.

Chromecast with Google TV works the same way. If you cast from your phone instead, note that the Chromecast streams over its own connection, so the TV's network, not the VPN on your phone, decides whether the error appears.

Apple TV

  1. Open Settings, General, VPN and Device Management and remove or disconnect any VPN profile.
  2. Press and hold the HBO Max icon, choose Delete App, then reinstall it from the App Store.
  3. Restart from Settings, System, Restart.

If you use AirPlay from an iPhone, the video still comes from the phone's connection, so iCloud Private Relay from step 3 can trigger the error on the TV.

PlayStation and Xbox

Consoles do not run VPN apps, so the error usually comes from a router VPN or from sharing a VPN connected laptop's internet with the console. Reset DNS to automatic in the console's network settings. On Xbox, hold the power button for 10 seconds for a full power cycle. On PlayStation, turn the console fully off rather than using rest mode, then start it again.

Want to keep a VPN on your TV?

If you protect your whole home network with a VPN, the cleanest setup is a router that supports split tunnelling, so the TV goes direct while laptops and phones stay protected. On Fire TV, Google TV and Apple TV, choose a provider with a native TV app and connect to a server in your home country. Our best VPN roundup lists which providers offer apps for each TV platform.

Travelling abroad with HBO Max

HBO Max is available in a growing list of countries, but the catalogue and even your ability to sign in can change when you travel. Your account is tied to the country where you subscribed, and the HBO Max terms of use restrict where content can be streamed. Before a trip, download episodes for offline viewing in the app while you are at home, and check whether HBO Max is offered in the country you are visiting. Using a VPN to reach content that is not licensed where you are may break the service terms, so always check them first. Quick checklist

  1. Turn off any VPN, proxy or antivirus "safe browsing" feature
  2. Check your IP address and provider name
  3. Disable iCloud Private Relay and Limit IP Address Tracking
  4. Disable browser extensions and custom secure DNS
  5. Clear the cache or reinstall the app
  6. Flush DNS and restart your router
  7. Allow location access on mobile
  8. If you use a VPN on purpose, pick a nearby home country server and block leaks
  9. On a TV, reset DNS to automatic, check the router for a VPN and clear or reinstall the app
  10. Contact your ISP, then HBO Max support, if nothing else works

Frequently asked questions

Why does HBO Max say I am using a VPN when I am not?

The most common reasons are iCloud Private Relay, a browser extension, an antivirus feature with a built in proxy, or a shared IP address from your internet provider that has been flagged. Work through steps 2 to 7 to find which one applies.

Can I watch HBO Max with a VPN turned on?

Yes, in many cases. If you connect to a server in your own country and your VPN does not leak DNS or IPv6 traffic, HBO Max usually plays normally. If one server is blocked, try another or use a dedicated IP address.

Why does HBO Max show the VPN error on my TV but not my phone?

Your TV and phone often use different connections or settings. The usual causes are a Smart DNS address saved on the TV, a VPN on the router that only applies to wired devices, or old app data on the TV. Follow the smart TV steps for your platform.

Can I install a VPN on a Samsung, LG or Roku TV?

No. These platforms do not support VPN apps. To use a VPN with them you need a VPN enabled router, which is also the most common reason those TVs show the HBO Max error.

Will clearing my cache sign me out?

Clearing app storage or browser cookies signs you out, so have your email and password ready before you start. Downloaded episodes on mobile may also be removed.

Does the error affect my account?

No. The VPN or proxy message only blocks playback on the current connection. It does not suspend or close your HBO Max account.
