Is NordVPN good in 2026?

NordVPN is one of the largest VPN services in the world, and after weighing it against every provider we cover, it remains our top all round pick. It combines 9,000+ servers in 149 countries, its own NordLynx protocol, a no logs policy audited six times and a set of security extras that rivals usually sell separately.

It is not perfect. The introductory price rises sharply at renewal, there is no port forwarding on standard plans, and access in heavily censored countries is unreliable. Speed and performance

Speed is where NordVPN pulls ahead. NordLynx is built on WireGuard, a lean modern protocol you can read about on the official WireGuard site. NordVPN adds a double NAT system so it does not need to store your IP address on its servers, which solves the main privacy concern with standard WireGuard.

Download and upload speeds

Independent testing backs this up. NordVPN keeps roughly three quarters of your base download speed and an even higher share of upload speed on nearby servers, which is more than enough for 4K streaming, large downloads and cloud backups. Latency and gaming performance

For gaming, ping matters more than raw speed. On a server in your own region NordVPN typically adds only a few milliseconds, so online matches feel the same as without a VPN. Long distance connections are a different story: crossing an ocean pushes ping above 120 ms, which is noticeable in fast shooters.

Does NordVPN work with streaming services?

NordVPN is one of the most dependable VPNs for streaming. Its SmartPlay feature quietly combines the VPN tunnel with smart DNS, so most platforms load on the first server you try.

Security and encryption

NordVPN uses AES 256 GCM on OpenVPN and IKEv2, the cipher standardised by the US government in NIST FIPS 197, and ChaCha20 Poly1305 on NordLynx. Newer apps also support post quantum encryption on NordLynx connections, which protects traffic captured today against future quantum attacks.

The security toolkit includes:

• Kill switch for the whole device, plus an app kill switch that closes chosen programs if the VPN drops
• DNS, IPv6 and WebRTC leak protection, with no leaks found in public testing
• Threat Protection that blocks malicious sites, trackers and ads, even when the VPN is off
• Double VPN, which routes traffic through two servers for extra anonymity
• Onion over VPN for Tor access without the Tor browser
• Obfuscated servers and NordWhisper, which disguise VPN traffic on restrictive networks

Privacy, logging and audits

NordVPN is incorporated in Panama, which has no mandatory data retention law and sits outside the Five, Nine and Fourteen Eyes alliances. Its policy states that it does not log browsing activity, traffic, source IP addresses or DNS queries. A username and session timestamp are processed briefly to enforce the 10 device limit and deleted within 15 minutes.

Those claims have been checked repeatedly. NordVPN has passed six independent no logs audits, most recently by Deloitte between November and December 2025, and its apps and infrastructure were reviewed by security firm Cure53 in 2025. Every server runs RAM only, so nothing survives a reboot.

Its record is not spotless. In 2018 an attacker accessed one rented server in Finland through a flaw left by the data centre. NordVPN says no user activity logs were exposed, and it responded by moving to RAM only, colocated servers and a public bug bounty program. Apps and devices

NordVPN supports almost every platform and allows 10 simultaneous connections. A router install counts as one device and covers everything on your network.

Our main complaint is that distant servers, Australia for example, can take 30 seconds or more to connect.

Torrenting and P2P

P2P traffic is allowed on all standard servers, so you no longer need to hunt for a dedicated category. The kill switch, leak protection and no logs policy add useful protection while you download. The one gap is port forwarding, which is only available through the paid dedicated server add on. Heavy seeders who rely on open ports may prefer another provider.
