Installing a VPN on a Fire TV Stick usually takes less than five minutes. On most sticks you open the Amazon Appstore, search for your provider, download the app, sign in and connect. There is no computer, cable or router setup involved, and everything is done with the remote.
There is one catch that did not exist a couple of years ago. Amazon now ships some sticks with Vega OS, a new operating system that cannot run Android apps and does not allow sideloading. The method that works on your stick depends on which system it runs, so this guide starts by showing you how to check. It then walks through the Appstore method, the sideloading method for older Fire OS sticks, the router option for apps that are not available, the settings worth changing, how to test the connection and the most common fixes.
Why use a VPN on a Fire TV Stick?
A Fire TV Stick is a small computer that talks to the internet all day. Your internet provider can see which services it connects to and when, and on hotel or shared WiFi so can the network owner. A VPN encrypts that traffic and routes it through a server you choose, which brings a few practical benefits:
- Privacy from your provider: Your ISP sees an encrypted connection to a VPN server instead of a list of streaming and app domains.
- Protection on public WiFi: Hotels, dorms and rental apartments often run open networks where other users can watch traffic. A VPN closes that gap.
- Less selective throttling: Some providers slow down video traffic at busy times. When the ISP cannot see that you are streaming, it cannot target it.
- Access to your home services while travelling: Connecting to a server in your own country lets subscriptions you already pay for behave as they do at home, within each service's terms.
A VPN does not stop Amazon or the streaming apps themselves from collecting viewing data, because that happens inside the apps after the tunnel ends. To limit that, review Settings, Preferences, Privacy Settings on the stick and turn off device usage data and app usage data collection.
Before you start: Fire OS or Vega OS?
Every Fire TV Stick runs one of two systems. Older and most current models run Fire OS, which is based on Android. Newer budget models such as the Fire TV Stick 4K Select run Vega OS, which Amazon built on Linux and React Native. Vega apps are written specifically for it, so an Android VPN app cannot run on a Vega stick at all. You can read more about the hardware history on the Amazon Fire TV page on Wikipedia.
To check which system you have:
- Press the Home button and open Settings (the gear icon on the right).
- Select My Fire TV, then About.
- Look at the software line. It will say Fire OS followed by a version number, or Vega OS.
| What you need to know | Fire OS sticks | Vega OS sticks |
|---|---|---|
| Based on | Android | Linux and React Native |
| Example models | Fire TV Stick Lite, 3rd Gen, 4K, 4K Max, Fire TV Cube | Fire TV Stick 4K Select, some Fire TV Stick HD units |
| VPN apps from the Appstore | Yes, most major providers | Yes, but only providers that built a Vega app |
| Sideloading APK files | Yes, through Developer Options | No |
| Fallback if no app exists | Sideload the provider APK or use a router VPN | Router VPN only |
What you need before installing
- A VPN subscription with a Fire TV app. Free trials rarely cover TV devices, and free VPNs are usually too slow for HD streaming.
- Your VPN login. Some apps let you sign in by scanning a QR code with your phone, which saves typing on the remote.
- Your Amazon account signed in on the stick, so you can download from the Appstore.
- A stable WiFi connection. Streaming in 4K through a VPN needs roughly 25 Mbps of real throughput after encryption.
Which VPNs have a Fire TV app?
All of the large providers we cover publish a Fire OS app in the Amazon Appstore. Vega OS support is newer and narrower, so check the list below before you buy if your stick runs Vega.
| Provider | Fire OS app | Vega OS app | Simultaneous devices | Refund window |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| NordVPN | Yes, Appstore | Yes, Appstore | 10 | 30 days |
| Surfshark | Yes, Appstore | Yes, Appstore | Unlimited | 30 days |
| ExpressVPN | Yes, Appstore | Yes, separate Vega app | Up to 14, by plan | 30 days |
| IPVanish | Yes, Appstore | Yes, Appstore | Unlimited | 30 days |
| Proton VPN | Yes, Appstore | Check the Appstore on your device | 10 on paid plans | 30 days |
App availability changes as providers update their software, so the quickest check is always to search the Appstore on the stick itself. If you are still choosing a provider, our best VPN guide compares the leading services on speed, privacy and streaming.
Method 1: Install a VPN from the Amazon Appstore
This is the recommended method for every Fire TV Stick, both Fire OS and Vega OS. Apps from the Appstore update automatically and are checked by Amazon before they are listed.
- Subscribe to a VPN on your phone or computer and note your login details.
- On the Fire TV home screen, select Find (the magnifying glass), then Search.
- Type or say the provider name, for example NordVPN or Surfshark. You can hold the microphone button on an Alexa remote and speak the name.
- Select the app from the results, then choose Get or Download. Make sure the publisher name matches the real provider, because copycat apps with similar icons do appear.
- When the install finishes, select Open.
- Sign in with your email and password, or scan the QR code shown on screen with your phone.
- When the stick asks to allow a VPN connection request, select OK. Fire OS shows this once so the app can create the tunnel.
- Choose Quick Connect or pick a server, ideally one in your own country for the best speed.
A small key icon or a "Connected" status in the app confirms the tunnel is up. You can now press Home and open your streaming apps as normal. The VPN keeps running in the background.
Method 2: Sideload a VPN on a Fire OS stick
Use this method only if your provider has no Appstore listing in your region, or if you need a version the Appstore does not carry. It does not work on Vega OS. Sideloaded apps do not update automatically, so you will need to repeat the process when a new version comes out.
Step 1: Turn on Developer Options
- Open Settings, then My Fire TV, then About.
- Highlight your device name (for example "Fire TV Stick 4K") and press the Select button on the remote seven times.
- A message confirms that you are now a developer. Press Back and you will see Developer Options in the My Fire TV menu.
Step 2: Install Downloader and allow unknown apps
- Search the Appstore for Downloader (the orange icon published by AFTVnews) and install it.
- Go to Settings, My Fire TV, Developer Options, then Install Unknown Apps.
- Find Downloader in the list and switch it On. Leave every other app switched off.
Step 3: Download and install the VPN APK
- Open Downloader and type the official APK download address from your VPN provider's website or help center. Never use APKs from mirror sites or forums.
- Select Go. When the file finishes downloading, choose Install.
- Select Done, then delete the APK file when Downloader offers, to free storage.
- Open the VPN from Your Apps and Channels, sign in and accept the connection request.
When you are finished, go back to Install Unknown Apps and switch Downloader Off again. That small step closes the door on accidental installs from untrusted sources.
Method 3: Protect the stick with a VPN router
If your stick runs Vega OS and your provider has no Vega app, or if you want to protect every device in the house at once, you can install the VPN on your router instead. The Fire TV then connects to WiFi normally, and all of its traffic passes through the tunnel without any app on the stick.
- You need a router that supports WireGuard or OpenVPN client mode, such as many ASUS, GL.iNet and DD WRT models, or a provider made router like ExpressVPN Aircove.
- Your provider supplies the configuration files or login details for the router.
- Changing server location means changing it on the router, which affects every device on that network.
A simpler alternative for travellers is to run the VPN on a laptop and share the connection as a hotspot, or to cast from a phone that already has the VPN switched on.
Settings to change after installing
The default settings work, but a few changes make a Fire TV VPN noticeably more reliable.
- Connect on launch or auto connect: Fire TV sticks restart for updates without warning. Turning on auto connect means the VPN comes back by itself.
- Protocol: Choose WireGuard or the provider's own fast protocol, such as NordLynx or Lightway. These use far less processing power than OpenVPN, which matters on a small stick. The WireGuard project site explains why the protocol is so light.
- Kill switch: Not every Fire TV app has one, and Fire OS has no system level option. If yours does, switch it on so traffic stops if the tunnel drops.
- Split tunnelling: Some apps let you exclude services, for example sending your local broadcaster app outside the VPN while everything else stays inside.
- Threat protection or ad blocking: Useful for blocking trackers, though occasionally it breaks a streaming app. Turn it off first if something stops loading.
How to check that the VPN is working
- With the VPN connected, open the Silk Browser (install it from the Appstore if needed).
- Visit any IP address checker, such as the one your provider offers on its website.
- The page should show the VPN server's location and IP address, not your own city or internet provider.
- Disconnect the VPN, refresh the page and confirm your real IP appears. Reconnect afterwards.
If your real location still shows while connected, the app may be using a DNS server outside the tunnel. Switch protocol, reconnect, or contact the provider's live chat for help.
Common Fire TV VPN problems and fixes
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| VPN app does not appear in search | Vega OS stick or regional Appstore listing | Check your OS, try a provider with a Vega app, or use a router VPN |
| Downloader cannot install the APK | Install Unknown Apps is off, or the stick runs Vega OS | Enable Downloader under Developer Options, or use the Appstore |
| Constant buffering | Distant server or OpenVPN protocol | Pick a closer server and switch to WireGuard or the provider protocol |
| Streaming app shows a proxy error | The server IP is known to the service | Try another server or the provider's streaming optimised server |
| VPN off after a restart | Auto connect disabled | Turn on connect on launch in the app settings |
| App freezes or crashes | Low storage or memory on older sticks | Clear cache under Settings, Applications, uninstall unused apps and restart |

Fire TV Cube, Fire TV smart TVs and Fire tablets
The steps above are not limited to sticks. The Fire TV Cube and Fire TV smart TVs from brands such as Insignia, Toshiba and Hisense run Fire OS too, so the Appstore and sideloading methods work the same way. Menu names are identical, although the Settings gear may sit in a different spot on the home screen of a smart TV.
Fire tablets also run Fire OS, but they use a touch interface. Open the Appstore app, search for your provider and tap Get. Sideloading on a tablet works through Settings, Security and Privacy, Apps from Unknown Sources rather than Developer Options. If you share one subscription across a stick, a tablet and a phone, check your provider's simultaneous device limit in the table above so nothing is logged out unexpectedly.
How to switch or remove a VPN on Fire TV
Changing provider or freeing storage is quick. Disconnect first, so the old app does not leave a broken tunnel behind.
- Open the VPN app and select Disconnect, then sign out.
- Go to Settings, Applications, Manage Installed Applications.
- Select the VPN app, then choose Clear data followed by Uninstall.
- Restart the stick by holding Select and Play for five seconds, then install the new provider using Method 1.
If you cancel a subscription inside the refund window, request the refund from the provider directly. Purchases made through the Amazon Appstore are refunded through Amazon instead, so it is usually simpler to subscribe on the provider's own website.
Is it legal to use a VPN on a Fire TV Stick?
Using a VPN is legal in most countries, including the US, UK, Canada, Australia and the EU. Amazon openly lists VPN apps in its own Appstore. What you watch still has to follow the law and the terms of each streaming service, and some services do not allow access from outside the regions where they hold licences. A VPN also does not make pirated streams legal. For a neutral overview of what a VPN can and cannot protect, see the Electronic Frontier Foundation guide to choosing a VPN.
Tips for the best experience
- Use a 5 GHz WiFi band or an Ethernet adapter. Weak WiFi slows a stick down far more than VPN encryption does.
- Restart the stick once a week by holding Select and Play together for five seconds. It clears memory and keeps apps responsive.
- Keep the VPN app updated. Appstore installs update by themselves, but sideloaded apps need a manual reinstall.
- Protect your Amazon and VPN accounts with strong, unique passwords, as recommended by CISA.
- Installing a VPN on your computer too? Follow our guides for Windows 11 and macOS.
Frequently asked questions
Can I install any VPN on a Fire TV Stick?
On Fire OS sticks you can install any provider that has an Appstore app or an official Android APK. On Vega OS sticks you can only use providers that built a Vega app, such as NordVPN, Surfshark, ExpressVPN and IPVanish.
Does a VPN slow down a Fire TV Stick?
Slightly. With a nearby server and WireGuard, most people see little difference in HD or 4K streaming. Large slowdowns usually come from distant servers, OpenVPN or weak WiFi.
Why can I not sideload on my new Fire TV Stick?
Your stick probably runs Vega OS, which does not support Android APK files or Developer Options sideloading. Use the Appstore app or a VPN router instead.
Is there a free VPN for Fire TV Stick?
A few free plans exist, but they limit speed, servers or data, which makes them poor for streaming. A paid plan with a 30 day refund window is a safer way to test.
Do I need to keep the VPN app open?
No. After you connect, press Home and open other apps. The VPN keeps running in the background until you disconnect or the stick restarts without auto connect enabled.
