Proton VPN Free is the free VPN we recommend to almost everyone who asks for one. It has no data cap, no ads and the same audited no logs policy as Proton's paid plans. NordVPN is one of the fastest and most capable paid VPNs on the market. Putting them side by side answers a question many people have: is a free VPN good enough, or should you pay?
The answer depends on what you do online. If you only need to protect your browsing on public WiFi with one device, Proton VPN Free covers you at no cost. If you stream, torrent, game or want to protect a whole household, the free plan runs out of road quickly and NordVPN pulls far ahead. Below we compare the two plan by plan, using official specifications, independent audits and our own testing, and explain exactly where the free plan stops.

What you actually get with Proton VPN Free
Most free VPNs pay for themselves by showing ads, capping your data or selling browsing data to third parties. Proton does none of that. The free plan is funded by people who pay for Proton's other plans, and Proton describes it as part of its mission to make private internet access available to everyone, including activists and journalists in censored countries. You can read Proton's own outline of the plan on its free VPN page.
With a free Proton account you get:
- Unlimited data and no time limit, so you will never be cut off halfway through the month.
- No advertising inside the apps.
- The same encryption as paid users, with WireGuard, OpenVPN and Proton's Stealth protocol.
- A working kill switch that blocks traffic if the VPN drops.
- The same audited no logs policy that covers Proton's paying customers.
- Apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iPhone and iPad, Chromebook, Android TV and Fire TV, plus browser extensions.
The trade off is control. Free users connect to servers in 10 countries, including the United States, Netherlands, Japan, Poland, Romania, Canada, Norway, Mexico, Singapore and Switzerland, but you cannot pick a country or server yourself. The app picks one for you. A Change server button gives you a different random server, with a cooldown between changes that grows to about ten minutes after the first few switches. You are also limited to one device at a time, and free servers do not support streaming or P2P traffic.
What NordVPN gives you that the free plan does not
NordVPN has no free plan. What you pay for is choice and capability. A NordVPN subscription opens more than 9,000 servers in 149 countries, lets you choose specific countries and cities, and covers 10 devices at once. Its NordLynx protocol, built on WireGuard, is consistently one of the fastest in independent testing.
On top of that, NordVPN adds specialty servers for P2P, Double VPN and Onion over VPN, obfuscated servers and the NordWhisper protocol for restrictive networks, Threat Protection features that block malicious domains, a Smart DNS option for devices that cannot run a VPN app, and 24/7 live chat. You can see the full breakdown, including plan tiers and renewal prices, in our NordVPN review.
Round 1: Price and value
This round is easy. Proton VPN Free costs nothing, never asks for a payment card and has no trial that expires. NordVPN Basic costs $3.49 per month on the two year plan, billed up front, and renews at $139.08 per year. Monthly billing costs $14.99. Every NordVPN plan bought directly includes a 30 day money back guarantee, and Android users can get a short trial through Google Play.
Value is a different question. At about the price of a coffee each month, NordVPN gives you 10 devices, streaming and torrenting. If you would use those features, the paid plan is good value. If you would not, you would be paying for things you do not need. Winner: Proton VPN Free.
Round 2: Server locations and choice
NordVPN lets you connect to any of its 149 countries, and in many of them you can pick a city. That matters for three reasons: you can choose a server near you for the best speed, you can choose a country to view local content, and you can switch quickly when a server is busy.
Proton VPN Free gives you 10 countries with no manual choice. You will usually be connected to a server reasonably close to you, but if you need an IP address in a specific country, for banking, local news or travel, the free plan cannot guarantee it. Winner: NordVPN.
Round 3: Speed and performance
Proton deserves credit here. Free servers are not throttled, every Proton server has at least 1 Gbps of bandwidth, and in everyday browsing and HD video calls the free plan feels fast. Proton reserves its 10 Gbps servers and VPN Accelerator benefits for paying users, though, and free servers are shared by many more people at peak times.
The larger issue is distance. Because you cannot pick the nearest server, you may be routed further away than necessary, which adds latency. NordVPN lets you pick the closest server every time, and NordLynx keeps speed loss small even on long distance connections. That is why NordVPN is a regular pick in our best VPN for Warzone guide, where ping matters. Winner: NordVPN.
Round 4: Streaming
Proton does not support streaming on its free servers. Some content may load, but there is no guarantee, and you cannot choose the country whose library you want to watch. Netflix, BBC iPlayer, Disney+ and Prime Video access are reserved for VPN Plus and Proton Unlimited.
NordVPN works with Netflix in the US, UK, Japan, Canada and many other regions, along with BBC iPlayer, Disney+, Prime Video and HBO Max. Its apps also run on Android TV, Fire TV and Apple TV, and SmartPlay DNS covers devices without an app. If streaming is your reason for getting a VPN, our best VPN for HBO Max guide shows how NordVPN performs on a demanding service. Winner: NordVPN.
Round 5: Torrenting and P2P
P2P traffic is blocked on Proton's free servers. If you want to torrent with Proton, you need VPN Plus, which unlocks P2P servers and adds port forwarding. NordVPN allows P2P on its standard servers in many countries and routes you to a suitable server automatically.
Neither of the two plans in this comparison offers port forwarding, which matters for seeding torrents and hosting game or media servers. Our explainer on VPN port forwarding covers when you actually need it. Winner: NordVPN.
Round 6: Devices and apps
This is one of the biggest practical gaps. Proton VPN Free covers one device. Connect a second and the first is disconnected. NordVPN covers 10 devices at the same time, and installing it on a router protects every device on your home network while using only one slot.
Both providers have polished apps for all the major platforms. Setup is equally simple: download the app, sign in and connect. If you need help, our step by step guides for installing a VPN on Windows 11 and installing a VPN on a Fire TV Stick work for both. Winner: NordVPN.
Round 7: Privacy, logging and audits
Both VPNs take privacy seriously, and both have proven it with independent audits. The differences are in the details.
- Jurisdiction: Proton is based in Switzerland, which has strong privacy law and sits outside the EU. NordVPN is registered in Panama, which has no mandatory data retention laws.
- Audits: Securitum has audited Proton's no logs policy every year since 2022. NordVPN has passed six no logs audits, the latest by Deloitte in late 2025.
- Transparency: Proton's apps are open source, so anyone can inspect the code. NordVPN's apps are closed source but independently audited.
- Infrastructure: NordVPN runs RAM only servers that wipe data on reboot. Proton uses full disk encryption on its servers.
- Payment: A free Proton account needs only an email address, so there is no payment trail linking you to the VPN.
Both are excellent. We give Proton the edge because open source apps and a free account with no payment details are hard to beat for privacy. Whichever you choose, confirm your setup with our guide on how to check whether your VPN is working. Winner: Proton VPN Free.
Round 8: Security features
The core protection is identical in strength: modern encryption, a kill switch and DNS leak protection on both. Beyond that, the free plan is deliberately bare. NetShield, Proton's ad, tracker and malware blocker, and Secure Core, which routes traffic through hardened servers in privacy friendly countries, both require a paid plan.
NordVPN Basic includes malicious domain blocking, Double VPN servers, Onion over VPN, split tunneling on Windows and Android, and post quantum encryption on NordLynx. Higher NordVPN tiers add a full ad blocker, antivirus and a password manager. Winner: NordVPN.
Round 9: Censorship and restrictive networks
This is where Proton's free plan surprises people. Proton includes its Stealth protocol on the free plan, which disguises VPN traffic as ordinary encrypted web traffic. That helps on school, office and hotel networks that block VPNs, and in countries with internet censorship.
NordVPN offers obfuscated servers and the newer NordWhisper protocol for the same job, with far more locations to choose from. Both approaches work well, and Proton deserves credit for not locking this behind a paywall. If you are moving abroad, our best VPN for expats guide covers which features matter most in restrictive countries. Result: Tie.
Round 10: Customer support
Free Proton users get the help center and email support. Live chat is reserved for paying customers. Proton's guides are good and email replies are helpful, but you may wait a while.
NordVPN offers 24/7 live chat and email to every subscriber. In our experience, chat agents answer within minutes and can walk you through configuration problems in real time. Winner: NordVPN.
Which VPN wins in everyday situations?
Specifications only tell part of the story. Here is which option we would pick for the situations readers ask us about most often.
| Situation | Better choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Checking email on airport or cafe WiFi | Proton VPN Free | Full encryption at no cost, one device is enough |
| Watching your home Netflix library abroad | NordVPN | You can pick your home country, and streaming is supported |
| Downloading Linux ISOs or other torrents | NordVPN | P2P is blocked on Proton's free servers |
| Getting past a blocked school or office network | Either | Proton Stealth and NordVPN obfuscation both work |
| Protecting a family with phones, laptops and a TV | NordVPN | 10 devices, router support and TV apps |
| Online gaming with low ping | NordVPN | Choose the nearest server and use NordLynx |
| Trying a VPN for the first time | Proton VPN Free | No payment, no expiry and no data cap |
| Maximum privacy with no payment trail | Proton VPN Free | Email only sign up, open source apps, Swiss law |
A pattern emerges. Proton VPN Free wins whenever the goal is protection: encrypting your traffic, hiding your IP address from websites and keeping your internet provider out of your browsing history. NordVPN wins whenever the goal is access or scale: reaching content in a specific country, sharing files, lowering ping or covering more than one device.
There is also nothing stopping you from using both. Many people keep Proton VPN Free on a work laptop or a spare phone and use a paid NordVPN plan for the family's streaming devices. Because Proton's free plan never expires, it also makes a sensible backup if your paid subscription lapses or a NordVPN server is temporarily blocked on a network.
The limits that push most people to upgrade
In our experience, free users tend to hit the same three walls, usually within the first few weeks:
- The second device. The moment you want the VPN on your phone and laptop at the same time, the free plan forces you to choose.
- The wrong country. Banking apps, local news sites and streaming services all care where your IP address appears to be, and the free plan does not let you decide.
- Peak time slowdowns. Free servers are shared by millions of users, so evenings can feel slower than the middle of the day.
If none of those bother you, there is genuinely no reason to pay. If one of them does, it is time to compare Proton VPN Plus and NordVPN directly, which we do further down.
Who should choose Proton VPN Free
Proton VPN Free is the right choice if your needs are simple and your budget is zero. It suits you if you:
- Use public WiFi in cafes, airports or hotels and want your traffic encrypted.
- Want to hide your browsing from your internet provider on one laptop or phone.
- Need to get around a blocked network at school or work, using the Stealth protocol.
- Care about privacy first and want open source apps under Swiss law.
- Want to try a VPN before deciding whether to pay for one.

Who should choose NordVPN
NordVPN is the better pick if a VPN is part of your daily routine rather than an occasional safety net. Choose it if you:
- Stream shows and sports from other countries.
- Torrent and want P2P servers that work automatically.
- Game online and need the lowest possible ping.
- Want to protect several devices, or your whole household through a router.
- Prefer to fix problems quickly with 24/7 live chat.
Is Proton VPN Plus a better upgrade than NordVPN?
If you start on Proton VPN Free and outgrow it, you do not have to switch providers. Proton VPN Plus costs the same as NordVPN Basic on a two year plan and removes almost every free plan limit. Here is how the three options compare.
| Feature | Proton VPN Free | Proton VPN Plus | NordVPN Basic |
|---|---|---|---|
| Two year price | $0 | $3.49/mo | $3.49/mo |
| Countries | 10, automatic | 149, choose any | 149, choose any |
| Devices | 1 | 10 | 10 |
| Streaming | No | Yes | Yes |
| P2P | No | Yes | Yes |
| Port forwarding | No | Yes | No |
| Secure Core or Double VPN | No | Secure Core | Double VPN |
| Ad and malware blocking | No | NetShield | Malicious domains |
| Live chat | No | Yes | Yes, 24/7 |
Pick Proton VPN Plus if you want port forwarding, Secure Core and open source apps. Pick NordVPN if you want the fastest connections, Smart DNS for TVs and round the clock live chat. Still undecided? Our list of the best VPNs ranks both against Surfshark, ExpressVPN and others.
How we compared them
We scored both VPNs across ten rounds that reflect what people actually use a VPN for: price, server choice, speed, streaming, torrenting, devices, privacy, security features, restrictive networks and support. Each round is based on the provider's official specifications, published audit reports and hands on testing of the current Windows, macOS, Android and iPhone apps. We compared Proton's free plan with NordVPN's cheapest full plan, because that is the real decision most readers face.
For independent advice on choosing a trustworthy VPN, the Electronic Frontier Foundation's guide to choosing a VPN is a useful, vendor neutral checklist that both of these providers pass comfortably.
