Is SetupVPN good in 2026?
SetupVPN is a lifetime free browser extension from SetupVPN Inc, a company that says it has served users since 2015. It promises unlimited bandwidth, more than 100 locations and one click setup in Chrome, Firefox and other browsers. On the Chrome Web Store it has over 1 million users and a 4.7 star rating.
The catch is that SetupVPN is a browser proxy, not a full VPN. It only covers traffic inside your browser, it has no kill switch and no independent audit, and its own store listing says it handles personal and activity data. If you want a free option you can trust, read our Proton VPN review, or see how paid services rank in our best VPN list.
How SetupVPN works
SetupVPN uses the browser proxy permission to route web traffic through its servers over an encrypted SSL connection. That hides your IP address from the sites you visit and from simple network filters, but anything outside the browser stays on your normal connection.
| Traffic type | Protected by SetupVPN | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Browser tabs | Yes | Websites see the proxy IP, not yours |
| Desktop apps | No | Email, chat and games use your real IP |
| Torrent clients | No | Peers can see your real IP address |
| System updates and DNS | No | Your provider can still see this traffic |
| Smart TV and console | No | There is no app for these devices |
A full VPN such as NordVPN encrypts every app on the device at the system level, which is the protection most people expect when they install a VPN.
Speed and performance
For light browsing SetupVPN is usable, but reliability is its weak spot. Recent Chrome Web Store reviews and independent testers report frequent connection failures and slow free servers, while SetupVPN markets its premium tier as the way to get faster, more stable servers.
- Expect slower page loads on busy free locations
- Switch to a nearby server if a connection fails or stalls
- Do not rely on it for video calls or gaming, which run outside the browser
- SetupVPN does not publish speed results, and no major lab has tested it recently
If speed matters, our ExpressVPN review covers a service with consistent independent speed tests.
Does SetupVPN work with streaming services?
Do not count on it. SetupVPN does not advertise streaming servers, and big platforms block most shared free proxy IPs. Netflix also notes in its VPN and proxy help page that its service can detect and block proxies. Because only the browser is covered, the Netflix, Disney+ or Max apps on your TV or phone are not unblocked at all.

Security and encryption
SetupVPN says it encrypts browser traffic with an SSL based connection to its proxy servers. That protects form data and browsing on public Wi-Fi from casual snooping, but the security toolkit stops there.
- No kill switch, so traffic can leak if the proxy drops
- No WireGuard or OpenVPN protocol choice
- No protection for apps outside the browser
- No ad, tracker or malware blocking
- No published leak test or security audit

Privacy, logging and data collection
This is the biggest concern. On its Chrome Web Store listing, the developer discloses that the extension handles personally identifiable information, location, authentication information and user activity. The listing also says this data is not sold to third parties.
| Topic | Status | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| No logs audit | No | No independent audit published |
| Transparency report | No | No public report of legal requests |
| Data handled | Broad | Personal info, location, auth data, activity |
| Jurisdiction | United States | Coral Gables, Florida, a Five Eyes country |
| Account | Required | Email sign up for the free tier |
Free services must pay for servers somehow, and without an audit you have to take SetupVPN at its word. The EFF guide to choosing a VPN explains why audits, ownership and data policies matter so much. If privacy is your main goal, a paid service with audits, such as Surfshark, is a far safer choice.
Extension and supported browsers
Setup is the strongest part of the experience. You install the extension, create a free account and pick a location from a short list, with almost no settings to learn.
- Chrome and Chromium browsers such as Edge, Brave and Opera
- Firefox through its own add on
- Simple country list with a one click connect button
- No desktop, TV or router apps for whole device coverage
That simplicity makes it handy for getting past a basic website filter on a school or office network, as long as you follow local rules and laws.
Is SetupVPN really free?
Yes, the core extension is free for life with no payment details needed. SetupVPN also sells a premium upgrade that it says brings faster servers, sold on short weekly terms as well as longer plans. Its terms of service allow refunds within 7 days, but not for complaints about speed.
Premium does not add a kill switch, full device apps or an audit, so paying fixes speed at best. For travel abroad, where reliability matters most, our best VPN for Japan guide lists services with full apps, and PureVPN is a low cost paid option.
Customer support
Support is basic. SetupVPN offers email support only, Monday to Friday from 8am to 6pm EST, with a separate abuse contact. There is no live chat and only a small help section, so fixing a broken connection on a weekend means waiting.
