How to fix VPN proxy detected errors: 12 fixes for Netflix, Hulu, BBC iPlayer and more in 2026

Why streaming services, banks and games show "VPN or proxy detected" errors, how they spot VPN traffic, and 12 fixes in the order that solves them fastest, including what to do when you get the error without any VPN at all.

Few messages are as annoying as "You seem to be using a VPN or proxy". You pay for the subscription, you press play, and the app refuses to load. The same thing happens on banking sites, ticket shops, online games and even Google search, which suddenly asks you to solve CAPTCHAs every few minutes.

A VPN proxy detected error simply means the service has looked at the IP address you are connecting from and decided it belongs to a VPN, a proxy or a data center rather than a normal home connection. Sometimes that is correct, because you are using a VPN. Sometimes it is a false positive, and you get the error with no VPN running at all.

This guide explains how detection works, why it happens, and gives you 12 fixes in the order that solves the problem fastest. It also covers the case where you see the error without a VPN, which is more common than most people think.

Quick answer: how to fix a VPN proxy detected error

  • Switch to another server in the same country. Detected IPs are flagged one by one, so a fresh server often works instantly.
  • Clear cookies and cache, or open a private window, so the service cannot read your old location.
  • Turn off IPv6 or use a VPN with IPv6 leak protection, because an IPv6 leak reveals your real network.
  • Turn on the VPN's own DNS and check for DNS and WebRTC leaks with the test below.
  • Use a streaming optimized server or a dedicated IP, which is shared by far fewer users than a regular VPN server.
  • Not using a VPN? Check for antivirus VPNs, browser proxy extensions and iCloud Private Relay, then ask your ISP to check your IP registration.

Test your connection right now

Before trying fixes, check what services actually see. Connect your VPN, then run the test below. If it shows your real IP, your real country or your ISP's DNS servers, the service can see that too, and no server switch will help until the leak is fixed.

VPN leak test

Run it once without your VPN, then connect and run it again to compare.

  • Shows the public IP, location and ISP websites see.
  • Checks whether WebRTC or IPv6 reveal a second, real address.
  • Compares your device timezone with your IP location.

We do not store results. Your IP is read by our server for this check, ISP details come from ipapi.co, and the WebRTC test runs in your browser. DNS leaks need a dedicated resolver test, so use one alongside this tool.

If you want to understand each result in more detail, our guide on how to check if your VPN is working explains every type of leak and what it means.

What does "VPN or proxy detected" actually mean?

Every website sees the public IP address your traffic comes from. Services that license content by region, or that need to fight fraud, compare that IP against large databases of known addresses. If the IP is listed as belonging to a VPN provider, a hosting company or an anonymous proxy, the service blocks it or limits what you can do.

The error looks different depending on the service. Here are the most common versions you will see in 2026:

ServiceError you seeWhat usually triggers it
Netflix"You seem to be using a VPN or proxy", code E106 or M7111-5059Flagged VPN IP, IPv6 leak, antivirus VPN or a misregistered ISP IP
Hulu"Anonymous proxy detected"Data center IP or location mismatch with your billing ZIP code
Disney+Error code 73, "not available in your region"IP from a region outside your account, or a flagged server
BBC iPlayer"BBC iPlayer only works in the UK"Non UK IP or a UK VPN IP already flagged by the BBC
Prime Video"Your device is connected to the Internet using a VPN or proxy service"Known VPN range or DNS that does not match your IP
HBO Max"Proxy or VPN detected"Shared VPN server used by many viewers at once
Banks and payment sitesLogin blocked, extra verification or a locked accountForeign or data center IP, sudden change of country
Google and Cloudflare sitesEndless CAPTCHAs, "unusual traffic" warningsMany users sharing the same VPN IP

Netflix explains the error on its official help page, "You seem to be using a VPN or proxy", and notes that VPNs are not supported for live events or on ad supported plans. That last point matters: on those plans, even a perfectly clean VPN connection can trigger the error.

How services detect VPN and proxy traffic

Knowing how detection works tells you which fix to try. Services rarely rely on one signal. They combine several:

  • IP reputation databases: commercial lists label every IP as residential, mobile, business, hosting or VPN. Most VPN servers run in data centers, so they are easy to label.
  • Too many users on one IP: when hundreds of accounts stream from the same address at once, the service knows it is not a household.
  • DNS mismatch: if your IP says one country but your DNS requests come from your ISP in another, that is a clear sign of a VPN.
  • IPv6 and WebRTC leaks: many VPNs only tunnel IPv4. If your device also has an IPv6 address, the service sees both, and they do not match.
  • Device and account signals: GPS on phones and smart TVs, your time zone, your billing address and the country your account was created in.
  • Cookies and stored data: a cookie set earlier from your real location can contradict your new VPN location.

Because the signals stack up, the best results come from fixing all of them, not just switching servers.

A quick note on terms of service

Streaming services license content country by country, and most of their terms say you should watch from the country your account is in. Using a VPN to reach a catalog from another country can break those terms, even though account bans for it are very rare. The fixes in this guide are meant for legitimate cases: travelling subscribers watching their home service abroad, people who keep a VPN on for privacy on public WiFi, and users who are blocked by a false positive. Always check the rules of the service you use.

12 fixes for VPN proxy detected errors

Fix 1: switch to a different server in the same country

Services block IP addresses, not whole VPN providers. If one server is flagged, another server in the same city or country may be clean. Disconnect, pick a different server, reconnect and reload the app. Many VPN apps let you reconnect to the same location and get a new IP each time. Try three or four servers before moving on.

Fix 2: use the provider's streaming or specialty servers

Top providers maintain servers whose IPs they rotate often so they stay unflagged. Surfshark and ExpressVPN handle this automatically on regular servers, Proton VPN marks streaming capable servers in its apps (paid plans only), and NordVPN uses SmartPlay to route streaming traffic. If your app has a streaming filter or label, use it.

Fix 3: clear cookies, cache and app data

Your browser or app may have stored your real location from an earlier visit. On a computer, clear cookies for the service or open a private window, then connect to the VPN before you open the site. On Android, go to Settings, Apps, choose the streaming app, then Storage and Clear cache. On iPhone and many smart TVs, delete and reinstall the app.

Fix 4: turn off IPv6 or enable IPv6 leak protection

This is one of the most common hidden causes. If your VPN only tunnels IPv4, your IPv6 address still reaches the service and gives away your real ISP and country. Look for "IPv6 leak protection" in your VPN settings and turn it on. If the app has no such option, disable IPv6 in your router or network adapter settings. On Windows, open Network Connections, right click your adapter, choose Properties and untick Internet Protocol Version 6.

Fix 5: use the VPN's DNS and fix DNS leaks

If you set a custom DNS such as 8.8.8.8 or 1.1.1.1 on your device or router, your DNS requests may bypass the VPN. Remove the custom DNS, turn on the VPN's own DNS or "DNS leak protection", and run the leak test again. The DNS servers listed should belong to your VPN, not your ISP.

Fix 6: block WebRTC leaks in your browser

WebRTC is a browser feature for video calls that can reveal your local and real IP even with a VPN on. Most VPN browser extensions block it. In Firefox you can also open about:config and set media.peerconnection.enabled to false. Chrome needs an extension such as the one from your VPN provider.

Fix 7: change the VPN protocol

Some networks and services treat protocols differently. If you are on WireGuard (also called NordLynx or Lightway on some apps), try OpenVPN or the provider's own protocol, and the other way round. A new protocol often also means a new server pool and a new IP address.

Fix 8: turn off location services or match your time zone

Phones, tablets and some smart TVs share GPS or system location with apps. If your GPS says one country and your IP says another, the app may refuse to play. Turn off location access for the streaming app, and on laptops make sure your time zone setting is not giving away a different region.

Fix 9: get a dedicated IP address

A dedicated IP is an address only you use. Because there are not hundreds of people streaming from it, it rarely ends up on block lists, and banks and work tools stop asking for extra verification. NordVPN, Surfshark, PureVPN and CyberGhost all sell dedicated IPs as an add on. It is the most reliable fix for people who need a VPN on all the time, for example expats managing bank accounts from abroad.

Fix 10: install the VPN on your router or use the app on the TV

Smart TVs and consoles often use their own hardcoded DNS, which can leak your real location. Installing the VPN directly on the device, or on your router, keeps all traffic and DNS inside the tunnel. If you use a Fire TV, our guide on installing a VPN on a Fire TV Stick walks through the setup.

Fix 11: log out and log back in after connecting

Some apps cache your region in your session. Sign out of the service, close the app completely, connect the VPN, then sign back in. On ad supported plans or live events, remember that Netflix does not support VPN use at all, so the error may stay no matter what you do.

Fix 12: switch to a VPN that keeps up with blocks

Free VPNs and small providers use a handful of IPs that are flagged quickly and rarely replaced. If you see proxy errors on every server, the provider simply is not investing in fresh IPs. The services in the table further down rotate addresses constantly and consistently pass streaming tests.

Getting the error without a VPN? Here is why

Many people see "VPN or proxy detected" with no VPN installed. This is a false positive, and the causes are different:

  • Antivirus with a built in VPN: Norton, Avast, AVG, McAfee, Kaspersky and Bitdefender often include a VPN or secure browsing feature that can switch on by itself. Netflix specifically mentions this.
  • Browser proxy extensions: ad blockers, data savers and "privacy" extensions sometimes route traffic through a proxy.
  • iCloud Private Relay and Limit IP Address Tracking: on iPhone, iPad and Mac, these hide your IP and can trigger proxy errors in Safari.
  • Carrier grade NAT: many mobile and fiber ISPs put thousands of customers behind one shared public IP. As explained in the overview of carrier grade NAT, streaming services can mistake that shared traffic for a VPN.
  • A misregistered IP block: if your ISP recently got new addresses, IP databases may still list them in the wrong country or as hosting.
  • Work or school networks: corporate firewalls and security proxies look exactly like a proxy to streaming services.

To fix a false positive, open fast.com, click "Show more info" and check the country next to Client. If it does not match where you are, look for one of the causes above. If it does match and you still get the error, restart your router to get a new IP, then contact your ISP with your IP address and ask them to correct its registration or contact the service directly.

Which VPNs get proxy errors the least?

Detection is a moving target, so no VPN works 100% of the time. These providers have the biggest IP pools, replace flagged addresses fastest and include the leak protection that matters:

VPNWhy it avoids proxy errorsDedicated IPIPv6 leak protection
NordVPNVery large server network, SmartPlay for streamingYes, add onYes
SurfsharkRotating IPs, unlimited devices, works on most streaming appsYes, add onYes
ExpressVPNLightway protocol and constant IP rotationYes, on selected plansYes
Proton VPNStreaming labelled servers on paid plans, strong privacy recordBusiness plans onlyYes

Settings that prevent proxy errors in the future

  • Turn on the kill switch, so your real IP never shows if the VPN drops mid stream.
  • Keep IPv6 and DNS leak protection on at all times.
  • Connect to the VPN before opening the streaming app or website.
  • Remove custom DNS from your router and devices.
  • Pick one or two servers that work and save them as favourites.
  • Keep the VPN app updated, since providers push new server lists through updates.
  • Disable other VPNs, antivirus secure browsing and proxy extensions so only one tunnel is active.

FAQ

Why does Netflix say I am using a VPN when I am not?

Usually because an antivirus VPN, a browser proxy extension or iCloud Private Relay is active, or because your ISP uses carrier grade NAT or recently received IPs that are listed in the wrong country. Check your location at fast.com, turn off those features, restart your router and contact your ISP if the problem continues.

Can I get banned for using a VPN on Netflix or Hulu?

Bans are very rare. The normal response is the proxy error itself, which stops playback until you disconnect or switch servers. Using a VPN to access another country's catalog can still break the service's terms, so check them first.

Does a dedicated IP stop proxy detected errors?

In most cases, yes. A dedicated IP is used only by you, so it does not get flagged for heavy shared use. It is especially useful for banks, work logins and Google, which react badly to shared VPN IPs.

Do free VPNs work with streaming services?

Rarely. Free VPNs have few servers and almost never replace flagged IPs, so streaming services block them quickly. Proton VPN's free plan is safe for privacy, but it does not include streaming servers.

Why does the error only appear on my smart TV?

Smart TVs often use hardcoded DNS servers and share location data with apps. Install the VPN on the TV itself or on your router, and turn off location access for the streaming app.

Why do I get endless CAPTCHAs with a VPN?

Google and Cloudflare see many users on the same VPN IP, which looks like automated traffic. Switching to a less busy server or using a dedicated IP usually stops the CAPTCHAs.
